Housekeeping: The main function of this department is to make sure the hotel is clean. You have to work as a team with room attendants, floor supervisors and maids etc. Ideally, you’ll be doing all hotel management specific job at the time of training, however, your expertise in a particular domain will be your forte in coming years.

General Operations: This is the main department which deals with staffs, customer care, quality control, room service etc. The bigger the hotel, the more the responsibilities and more is the pressure.

After gaining a couple of years of experience, the salary of the general manager can be very high which could be around 2-3 lac per month. As a fresher, you can expect an average starting salary somewhere around 30-55k per month plus the incentives and perks you’ll get will be an added bonus. Housekeeping supervisors and front office supervisors can earn about 35-45k after two or more years of experience. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, hotel managers are paid attractive bonuses and commissions too.

Cons: The working hours might not suit everyone, as it’s not a 9-5 job. You’ll have to be on our toes every single day, it’s a physically demanding environment. It’s difficult to please every guest, you’ll need high tolerance and patience power. Starting salary in a low budget hotel might be low. As a trainee, you’ll be exposed to pretty much every job which you might not like.
